About Operating Systems

Operating Systems

An operating system (OS) is a group of software that manages computer hardware resources and specifies common services for computer applications.

The operating system is a necessary element of the system software in a computer system. Application programs usually require an operating system to function. Operating systems can be found on almost any device that contains a computer—from cellular phones and video game consoles to supercomputers and web servers. For large systems, the operating system has even greater responsibilities and powers.
Examples of popular modern operating systems : Android, BSD, iOS, Linux, OS X, QNX, Microsoft Windows.
Some operating systems used only in Mobile phones and some used in personal computers and servers. Android is the most popular smart phone operating system in the world.

Examples of operating systems

GNU and Linux : GNU Linux is Unix-like operating system that was created without any actual unix code. Linux can be used on a wide range of devices from servers to wristwatches. The Linux kernel is used in some popular distributions, such as Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Google's Android.

Android is an operating system based on the Linux kernel. Its devices also sell more than Windows, Mac OS and iOS devices combined. As of July 2013 the Google Play store has had over 1 million Android apps published, and over 50 billion apps downloaded. Initially developed by Android, Inc., which Google backed financially and later bought in 2005. Since 2008, Android has seen some updates which have incrementally improved the operating system, adding new features and fixing bugs in previous releases. Android has a growing selection of third party applications, which can be acquired by users either through Google Play or the Amazon Appstore, or by downloading and installing the application's .APK file from another site.
